Becoming Mum

'Becoming Mum' is a six-week, therapist-led postnatal support programme where you can talk honestly about your experience of motherhood, connect with other mums and make space for your own emotional wellbeing.

Who is the course for?

The 'Becoming Mum' course is for mums with babies up to around 6 months.

You do not need to have a diagnosis or be experiencing a mental-health crisis to join the programme but simply need to be openminded and non-judgemental of others' experiences.

Each course runs with 6-8 mums and your baby is welcome to attend with you should you wish.

What will I gain from it?

Six weeks of therapeutic support, connection, and space for you and your baby. Over the length of the course, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Feel less alone and more understood
  • Make sense of your transition into motherhood
  • Talk honestly without judgement or pressure
  • Develop greater self-compassion
  • Build confidence in yourself as a mother
  • Connect with other women with young babies

The sessions were instrumental in fostering positive changes, and I now feel more empowered and capable of navigating life’s challenges with a newfound sense of control. Emma’s expertise and the structured approach of integrative therapy has proven to be invaluable assets in enhancing my overall thought process and being able to manage certain situations. Thank you so much Emma!

What will we explore?

Week 1 — My Journey Into Motherhood

The programme will begin gently, encouraging you to connect with other participants whilst creating a safe, supportive space to explore your journey into motherhood. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your pregnancy, birth and early experiences of becoming a Mum.

Sharing is always your choice; this is a gentle reflection and meaning-making session rather than birth-trauma processing.

Week 2 — The Motherhood I Imagined

Many of us enter motherhood with a strong image in our minds of what it will look like and how it will feel to be a Mum. The reality doesn’t always measure up.

During the second week, we will explore the expectations you may have carried into motherhood and how these compare with your reality. We’ll begin to consider 'matrescence' — the transition into becoming a mother — including changes to your identity, relationships and sense of self.

Week 3 — The Mum I Had, The Mum I Am

Week three introduces the concept of attachment and will allow us to explore how your early life experiences may be showing up in the way that you parent. We will explore the messages you may have learnt about emotions and look at your needs growing up, and how these may influence the way motherhood feels for you now. We’ll also consider bonding with your baby, the pressure to get it ‘right’, and why being a good mum doesn’t mean being a perfect one.

Week 4 — When Motherhood Feels Too Much

Having a baby can bring enormous love alongside a WHOLE new level of responsibility, worry and mental load. Week four will see us explore anxiety, fear and the changes that can happen to your nervous system after becoming a mum, as well as the strange loneliness that can exist even when you’re rarely alone. We’ll consider your support, relationships and what it means to have — and sometimes need to build — your own village.

Week 5 — My Body, My Boundaries, My Needs

During week five, we will consider the changes made to our body by becoming a mum. Perhaps we no longer recognise the body in the mirror anymore, or dislike it even. We’ll explore body image, physical change and what it can feel like when your body no longer feels entirely your own. We’ll also consider being ‘touched out’, rest, intimacy, boundaries and the often difficult question of how your needs can exist alongside your baby’s.

Week 6 — The Mum I’m Becoming

In our final week, we’ll bring together what you’ve discovered throughout the programme. We’ll explore the idea of the ‘perfect mum’, the expectations and ‘shoulds’ you may be carrying, and where these messages came from. You’ll consider what you want to keep, what you’re ready to let go of and the values you want to take forward as you continue becoming the mum— and woman — you want to be.

Frequently asked questions

Can my baby come?

Babies (up to 6 months) are very welcome, but you are not required to bring your baby to every session. There will be space to feed, change, bounce and jiggle your baby. I want participants to be able to join in with these sessions and understand that in these early months, it is hard to leave baby behind (or even find the childcare to support this!)

How many sessions do I need to attend?

You will be asked to commit to attending all six weeks where reasonably possible because consistency helps the group feel safe and connected. However, life with a young baby is unpredictable, and illness, appointments or difficult days will be approached with understanding.

Is 'Becoming Mum' right for me?

'Becoming Mum' is for any mum with a baby aged up to six months who would value therapeutic support, honest conversation and connection with other women.

It may be right for you if:

  • Motherhood feels different from what you expected
  • You feel lonely, overwhelmed or unsure of yourself
  • You would like to talk openly without judgement
  • You are finding the transition into motherhood emotionally complicated
  • You want to understand yourself and your experience more deeply
  • You would like to build connection, self-compassion and confidence

'Becoming Mum' is a therapeutic support programme rather than a crisis service or a replacement for individual mental-health treatment.

If you are currently in crisis, concerned about keeping yourself or your baby safe, or need intensive individual support, the group may not be the right support at this time. We can talk about this sensitively during your introductory call and consider what would be most helpful for you.

How do I sign up?

Email me to enquire about a place.

I will contact you within three working days to arrange a free 20-minute introductory telephone call. A video call is also available if you would prefer one.

The call gives us an opportunity to talk about what you hope to gain from the programme, answer your questions and consider whether Becoming Mum feels like the right support for you.

Places will be offered in enquiry order, subject to suitability, until the group is full.

How much does 'Becoming Mum' cost?

The complete six-week programme costs £150. This covers all six group sessions and the accompanying programme materials.

How do I pay?

Payment is made by bank transfer. I will provide the payment details once your introductory call has taken place and a place has been offered.

Your place will be held for three working days and confirmed once the full payment or first instalment has been received.

You can pay the £150 fee in full or in two instalments of £75. Your first instalment confirms your place, and the second instalment is due by Monday 19 October 2026.

I'm really interested but not sure if I can afford the programme...

I want my programmes to be accessible and inclusive of all mothers. For this reason, I am offering one supported-price place at £120, payable in full or in two instalments of £60.

You can ask to be considered for this place when you email to enquire. You will not be asked to provide financial evidence or explain your circumstances.

What happens if I need to cancel?

If you cancel within 14 days of making your booking, you will receive a full refund.

After this period, a refund will be provided if your place can be filled by another participant, less a £15 administration charge. Full cancellation terms will be provided before you make a payment.

Will I receive a refund if I miss a session?

The fee reserves your place for the complete six-week programme, so refunds cannot be provided for individual sessions you are unable to attend.

What happens after 'Becoming Mum'?

Following 'Becoming Mum' participants have the opportunity to join 'Becoming Me'.

'Becoming Me' is a planned, baby-free follow-on programme providing deeper therapeutic space to explore identity, your changing body, relationships, intimacy, boundaries and reconnecting with yourself as a woman as well as a mother.

It will be available both to women completing 'Becoming Mum' and to other mothers within the first two years after birth who feel ready for deeper, baby-free therapeutic work.

'Becoming Mum' will not be a prerequisite, although existing participants will receive priority booking. There is no obligation to continue, and 'Becoming Me' will be booked separately.

What is 'Becoming Mum' not?

'Becoming Mum' is not a baby class or parenting course, and you will not be told how you should care for your baby. It is also not a crisis service, a replacement for individual therapy or a space for intensive birth-trauma processing. You will never be pressured to share personal experiences—listening, reflecting and simply being present are all valid ways to take part.

If you feel you need support but group therapy is not the right option for you at the moment, contact me directly to see how I might be able to help.
